Famous Monsoon Treks in Nepal
Monsoon season in Nepal is often considered a “do not trek” season. But actually there are a few treks which are better in monsoon season, in comparison to other trekking seasons. Monsoon in Nepal starts from late May and lasts to late August. In this period most part of Nepal receives rain and thunderstorms. However, the rainfall is mostly during the afternoons. Only in a few places in Nepal, it might rain from the morning to the night, for a few days in a row, but it is not common.
Famous Monsoon Treks in Nepal Despite monsoon season being generally discouraged for trekking in Nepal, there are a select few treks that can be enjoyed during this time. Monsoon in Nepal typically spans from late May to late August, with rain and thunderstorms being prevalent. However, the rainfall is primarily concentrated in the afternoons, with only a few areas experiencing continuous rain throughout the day. These treks allow you to explore the mesmerizing beauty of the Himalayas while ensuring safety precautions are taken.

In contrast there are some places in Nepal like the Upper Mustang region, where it does not rain at all, not even during the rainy season.
A common perception for trekking in Nepal is that the best time for a trek is in autumn or in spring. But there are many treks that can be done during the monsoon season. This is called trekking in rain shadow zone. Treks in the rain shadow zone are at their best specifically during the monsoon season, but can also be done during the trekking high seasons in spring and autumn.
Places such as Upper mustang, Dolpo region, and Narphu valley Circuit are considered as the best monsoon season treks in Nepal. Also the popular Everest base camp trek can easily be done during the monsoon season.

Trekking to Everest base camp during the monsoon season might not offer a crystal clear sky with blue contrast and White Mountains. But the dry landscape of Everest trekking trail above Namche – where rain is rare and even if it rains, it will rain in the afternoon – makes Everest one of the good options for monsoon trekking in Nepal. Do not expect to see the mountains 24/7; the clouds keep on moving and there will be just short windows of viewing the Everest or any of the other mountains. But if you time your day to day treks during the mornings, trekking to the Everest base camp during the monsoon season will be a perfect experience.
Monsoon season trekking in Nepal is recommended for those, who love to be in the nature with less crowds, and who are not specifically looking to see the white capped mountains, but maybe some other nature’s wonders that are not present when trekking during the high seasons. For example, if you choose to trek to Annapurna base camp in Monsoon season (in july), once you get above the treeline the trekking trail will be bounded with wild flowers and their fragrance is filling the air. Or imagine the thrill of seeing the sunrise behind the mountains and the morning sun before the clouds cover the sky in the afternoon.
Hint – If you are debating on which trek to choose for the monsoon season in Nepal, be clear that the first 5 treks listed below are rewarding trekking destinations for Monsoon. Apart from that, other common trekking destinations like ABC and EBC can be done during monsoon – and trekking to those places is still worthwhile but read the details of prospective (how and why they are recommended) This is just our recommendation.
This is just our recommendation

E – Upper Dolpo trek

Trekking to Upper Dolpo is adventure upgraded form of trekking to Upper Mustang region. People and culture is similar, landscape is similar and the weather is similar. Adventure upgrade is unlikely character of upper Dolpo trek with Upper Mustang trekking. In upper Mustang a trekkers do not walk higher than 3800 meters above the sea level, whereas in Upper Dolpo trekking trekkers must walk over the altitude of 5000 meters. Two high passes of Upper Dolpo trekking are adventure hike.
Trekking to Upper Dolpo is, trekking to the hidden valley of Nepal, which used to be a separate kingdom before unification of Nepal, started in the 17th century by King Prithivi Narayan Shah. In between 6th to 8th century, kingdom of Tibet got defeated in the war and people migrated to Nepal and started living in this hidden Land beneath the shadow of Dhaulagiri Himalaya.
As the Kingdom of Lo in upper mustang was in existence by then & the Lho Kingdom attacked the Dolpo region and unified Dolpo into Kingdom of Lho, in 14th century. In 6th to 8th century Upper Dolpo used to be ruled by the king of Lho Kingdom. Lho Kingdom had their king’s palace at Lho Manthang and thos king from Upper Mustng defeated the King of Upper Dolpo.
Upper Dolpo region lies in Dolpo District of present Nepal and is conserved within She Phoksundo national Park. This National park is located in Dolpa district and mugu district (majorly Mugu district). It was established in 1984AD. Shey Phoksundo is largest national aprk of Nepal with Covered Area of 3555km at an Altitude – 1500 to 6000m (lies in the Tibetan Plato region). Animals conserved by Shey Phoksundo National Park are Tibetan antelope (jarayo in Nepali) or (hiran in Nepali language), Wild yak, Golden eagle (can carry 3 times bigger than his body). Birds in PseyPhoksundo National park range -150+ species in the latest recorded in 2020.
From Upper dolpo trek trail you can see the entire range of Mount Dhaulagiri, Mt Manaslu and Mt Annapurna. Crossing the high passes like Kang La pass (5,151m) and Saldang La pass (4,785m) is an adventure to the wilderness. Apart from the high passes of Upper Dolpo trek, trekkers spend a night by the deepest lake of world – Shey Phoksundo Lake, near Phoksundo village. Local villagers believe this lake is holy and formed for easy passage of their Lama Guru.
Upper Dolpo trekking involves camping trekking till 2021, as there are no any tea houses in few high passes. Trekking in the remote Nepal with antique culture conserved from long ago and different landscape from rest of Nepal is a reason to trek in Upper Dolpo. Because of the geological location of Upper Dolpo trekking trail in rain shadow zone of Nepal Himalaya; Upper Dolpo trekking welcomes trekker in the month of June/July.
End of May to early august is monsoon season in Nepal when it rains normally in the afternoon in most part of Nepal. But at the mean time Upper Dolpo and Upper Mustang region which lies in Tibetan Platue are dry and hence recommended as best Monsoon treks in Nepal.
Upper Dolpo trekking itinerary depends on the interest and timeline of trekkers; however few options are discussed in the suggested itinerary below. Any of the trekking itineraries for Upper Dolpo trekking can be customized & the tailoremade trip to upper Mustang trek can be with jungle safari, homestays, and different village activities’ and boating in the lake of Phosundo or peak climbing in the region, feel free to share your interest and we will send you a tailor-made trip details.

F – Upper Annapurna Circuit trek

Annapurna circuit trek is one of the famous trekking in Nepal. But as a recommended trekking destination for monsoon season, Annapurna circuit trek has a long and wide elevation profile. With that being said, just a small portion of Annapurna circuit is a best monsoon treks in Nepal. As APC trek starts from the altitude of 700 meters at Bensisahar, and this is not rain shadow zone.
Whereas; places like manang, yak kharak, Pisang and Nangwal are higher than 3000 meters above the sea level. These destinations of Upper mustang are not only higher in elevation, but also lies in rain shadow zone. That is why, upper part of Annapurna trek is best fit for monsoon treks in Nepal.
Upper Annapurna circuit trek starts from Pisang village. Pisang village has road connectivity, till this destination you can drive by jeep and start trekking towards upper pisang. The dry landscape, pristine culture of people, local dialects similar to Tibetan dialects, old Monastery and thatched house on this part of Annapurna circuit is more or less like Upper Mustang or Lower Dolpo trekking route.
Also because of it’s location in the rain shadow zone, rain will not be a problem even in the rainy season. On both side of Annapurna circuit trek, upper region – generally above 3000 meters above the sea level are regarded as the no rain destinations. On manang side – places from Pisang all the way to Thorongla Pass witness less rain even in the rainy season of Nepal. And on the other side destinations above Marpha is dry and witness no rain even in the rainy season.
That is why trekking in upper Annapurna region is in route of Marpha village, Jomsom village, Kagbeni, Muktinath, Thorongla, Phedi, Yak Kharka,Manang, Ngwal, Upper Pisang and Pisang. Upper Annapurna trek start from Pisang village, till here is the roadway connectivity and accordingly Marpha has roadway to drive back to Pokhara.
Following is the suggested itinerary for Upper Annapurna circuit trek, which is suitable for monsoon season. However, the roadway connectivity is all the way to Manang on one side of the trail and till Muktinath temple on other side of Upper Annapurna Trek. And the trekking itinerary is discussed accordingly.

G – Everest base camp trek

Everest base camp trek is one of the driest trekking in Nepal. Saying that; Everest base camp trek starting from Lukla, can be done all around the year. EBC trek is also recommended for trekking in the Monsoon season. As the trekking to Everest starts from the height of 2800 meters above the sea level, which is nearly equal to 3000 meters and this altitude has really small chance of raining. Once you start your trek on 2nd day of Everest base camp trek at Namche Bazzar that is above 3000 meters, Namche is at 3440 meters above the sea level.
From Namche Bazzar the chance of rain is less than 10% but the clouds on the sky might be annoying. But still the mysty cloud moving with the flow of wind and giving window opening to the towering mountains is amazing. Along with the window view of Everest base camp trek in Monsoon, sky might be clouded but the ground of the trekking trail will be filled with colorful flowers. As rainy season is perfect to witness the beauty of wild flowers of Everest region, trekkers visiting EBC in rainy season will have great experience of nature.
But to be honest with you, trekking in June, July, August; which is called rainy season in Nepal – will not give 100% clear weather all day every day. Whereas, most of the early mornings are with clear sky and you will be able to see the Mountain View.
Everest base camp trek starting from Lukla starts higher than rain zone in Nepal that is why you will not soak yourself in the rain that much, but the clouds on the sky might not be helpful to capture the complete view of mountains around you. Still, there are few benefits of trekking in the Monsoon, trekker will find their peace on the trail as they will be alone, misty clouds and window opening view are overwhelming, flowers on the trail are not just beautiful but inspiring, tea houses will be almost empty and mountain hospitality will be the best ever.

I – Gokyo valley trek

Gokyo Valley trek is also called Gokyo ri trek in world famous Everest Himalaya region. So the trek starts after flying to Lukla, which is already around 3000 meters. From this altitude the rainfall is very less and once you get to Nmache at 3440 meter above the sea level; you will start trekking above the rain line of Nepal. Thus trekking in Gokyo valley will be in the dry trekking trail even in the rainy season. In general Gokyo valley trek is similar to Everest base camp trek, in environment regard. But the trail I different than Everest base camp trekking trail.
Gokyo valley trek is towards the Choyu base camp trail and is Southern river valley of Everest base camp trekking trail. Gokyo valley trek is regarded as the best monsoon trekking route to see Everest from distance, without getting to Everest base camp itself. Everest base camp trek is not hard but harder than Gokyo valley trek. But the view of Mount Everest from the top of Gokyo ri is perfect, as one can see almost half of Everest.
Alike to Everest base camp trek discussed above, Gokyo valley trek is also same with cloud, and the wild flowers in the route to Gokyo Lake. But the altitude of Gokyo valley trek is lower than EBC trail and the lakes of Gokyo are outstanding. In Monsoon season all the 6 lakes of gokyo will be beautiful inside the misty cloud. Blue water on the lakes of gokyo under the cloud will look awesome, whereas the wild flowers by the gokyo valley trek route is outstanding.
Itinerary for Gokyo valley trek has multiple options where few of them are discussed in the option.

Trail of short Annapurna circuit starts from the jeep point before Jhinu hot-spring and trek continues into the jungle and get into, no tree line zone once it gets to MBC. MBC is the base camp of Machhapuchhre Himala. Machhapuchre translates to Fishtail in English and Mount Fishtail is regarded as the holy mountain of Nepal. One and only holy mountain of Annapurna region, to which, Nepal government do not issue climbing permit. Mt fishtail is holy.
