General description of Sagarmatha National Park

Sagarmatha national park is home to the highest peak (Mount Everest), which conserves many trails of Everest region trekking. This National Park was established in 1976 AD. Where in 1979AD, Sagarmatha National Park became the first National park of Nepal to be enlisted in the UNESCO world heritage site.

The altitude range of Sagarmatha National Park is from 2845m (9334ft.) at Monjo village to 8848m (29029ft.) at the top of Mount Everest.

In Nepali Everest is called “Sagarmatha”, which is how this national park is named as Sagarmatha National Park by the name of the tallest peak, in Nepali language.

Major attraction of Sagarmatha National Park is obviously Mount Everest(8848m) and other neighboring peaks, deep gorges, numerous glaciers along with longest glaciers of the world “Khumbu glacier”. Khumbu glacier starts from Everest basecamp and extends all the way to Thukla village.

How to get & what to do in Everest region trekking?

To reach to Sagarmatha National Park you have to take a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. Ktm Lukla flight is around 30 minutes.

And then you have to start trekking from Lukla towards small village of Phakding or you can trek all the way to Monjo. Monjo village is the national park entrance point. Passing through the sagarmatha national park entrance or exit gate – you will get to Jorsalle village. Jorsalle village is the last human settlement before reaching to Namche bazzar.

      During island peak climbing you will also get a chance to explore the Everest base camp. Itinerary which takes you to everest basecamp and come back for peak climbing will properly acclimatize your body.

      However, if stamina is the issue; it is better to go with only island peak climbing itinerary, which skips Everest basecamp trek.

      Basic climbing knowledge & use of normal equipment is sufficient for island peak climbing.

      Mount Makalu is close on sight from this peak in Everest region. Whereas you can not see Mount everest.

      Lobuche peak lies by the route to everest basecamp. Trekking to everest basecamp has destination village – Lobuche. As the name of the village this peak is next to it.

      From Lobuche village we trek to Everest basecamp. But Lobuche peak can be climbed from the village or from another side of the hilltop. Lobuche peak is very near to Everest and the location of summit is in the middle of Khumbu Himalaya range.

      Peak has 2 summits, famous as east and west lobuche peak – climbing is right in front of Mt Everest.

      Lobuche peak climbing is technical as use of rope is mandatory while walking on the ridge of this snow capped mountain. Climbing involves both ice and rock climbing. This could be bright side of the peak as well as chhalenging.

      Mera Peak climbing is near Everest, known for the most climbing peak of Nepal with an elevation of 6476m.

      Mera Peak is the highest trekking peak of Nepal but it is not technical, only requires basic knowledge of Climbing. Only the altitude will be an issue while trekking towards the summit of mera peak.

      Mera Peak climbing offers you the view of world highest peak mount Everest and others peaks above 8000m and more than 100 of peaks below 8000m.

      Wildlife

      You can find varieties of wildlife at Sagarmatha National Park such as Himalayan tahr, musk deer, jackal, weasel, black bear, wolf, snow leopard, lynx, pikka and ghoral.

      Sagarmatha National Park you conserves 193 species of birds and some of them are snow Danphe (National bird of Nepal from peasant family) pigeon, snow cock, impeyan pheasant, Himalayan griffon, lammergeyer and many others.

      At lower altitude of Sagarmatha National Park you can find the vegetation such as Pine and hemlock forests and above 3500 meters you can find the forest of rhododendron (National flower of Nepal) silver fir, birch and juniper trees at Sagarmatha National Park.

      Entrance fee and Permit for Sagarmatha National Park

      Sagarmatha National Park has an entrance fee of Rs. 25 for Nepal citizens, Rs. 1500 per person per entry for SAARC citizen and Rs. 3000 per person per entry for foreign citizen.

      Apart from national park you are obliged to pay local government authority for entering the national park of Sagarmatha.
