"; Annapurna South Expedition » Nepalgram

Annapurna South expedition - 22 Days

Annapurna south is in the range of  55 km long massif in the Himalayas, seen from Ghorepani & poonhill. Annapurna south expedition takes to the highest point seen in Annapurna range, the summit of Annapurna south stands at 7273m. Annapurna is located east of a great gorge cut through the Himalaya Mountains by the Kali Gandaki River, which separates it from the Dhaulagiri range. This gorge is the deepest himalayan gorge of earth.

Annapurna is a Sanskrit name which literally means “full of food” (feminine form), but is normally translated as Goddess of the Harvests. In Hinduism, Annapurna is a goddess of fertility and agriculture and an avatar of Durga.

The entire Annapurna range and surrounding area are protected within the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP), the first and largest conservation area in Nepal, established in 1986 by the Nepal Trust for Nature Conservation. The Annapurna Conservation Area is home to several world-class treks, including the Annapurna Circuit, ABC, Tilicho lake trek, Mustang trek.

Annapurna south face base camp is situated at 4000 meter and the advance base camp is on west bank of the glacier between Annapurna south and mount Hiunchuli. Climb up to the glacier is a little bit difficult gullies on all sides.

The camp 1 of Annapurna south expedition is fixed at the 5000 meter, Camp-2 at 5970meter; and camp 3 is at 6400 meter high. From Camp 3 the summit can be made. Climbing Annapurna south seems easy from North East route of side.

Annapurna South(7220m) lies in the heart of the Annapurna Himal and has very close view of numerous mountains, which includes Annapurna I (8091m), Annapurna II (7,937m), Annapurna III (7,555m), Annapurna IV (7,525m), Gangapurna (7,454m), Annapurna South (7,220m). However, climbers can see other peaks from Makalu, Manaslu, Dhaulagiri and Everest range as well.

1st ascent on

15/10/1964 AD(30/06/2021 BS

1st ascent by

Shiochiro Uyeo ( Japan ),
Mingma Tsering Sherpa ( Nepal )

Annapurna South (Annapurna Dakshin) was first ascended by a Japanese expedition, via the North face in 1964. It was also attempted by Italian team in 1988.

Tek & climbing route of Annapurna south

Preparation for Annapurna south expedition begins from Kathmandu & Pokhara. We travel to Pokhara via private coach and then we stay overnight at Pokhara. The next day we drive to Dhampus, and then our trek starts at P0thana, a little temperate region of forested hillsides like, Magar and Gurung villages, from where the trekking route of Annapurna South expedition continues.

After reaching Ghandruk, Tadapani & Kopra pasture, our campsite remains right below the South face of Mt. Annapurna. With the amazing high altitude trekking experience, we set up the Base Camp for climbing to Mt. Annapurna South there. After basecamp to all other higher camps the route we follow will be safe and as per the site condition.

Looking forward

Annapurna south expedition is an adventure loved by mountaineers. Mixed up experience of wild trekking and high altitude – ice climbing is not just fun but a life lesson. An easy life lesson with our guides who have been to the summit of Annapurna south time and again.

Overview of Annapurna south expedition

  • Other Name: Modi Peak, Moditse
  • Elevation: 7219 M / 23684 FT
  • Latitude: 28º 31′ 06
  • Longitude: 83º 48′ 29
  • Province: Gandaki Pradesh
  • Mountain Range: Annapurna
  • District: Myagdi/Kaski
  • Municipality/Rural Municipality: Annapurna/Annap

Annapurna south is the nearest peak seen from the hilltop of Poonhill. Trekking towards its basecamp is wild and explores deep into both the nature and culture of the region.

So far expedition is concerned above Camp I the route from Camp 2 to Camp 3 becomes steeper requiring fixed rope on some of the more difficult sections including a bergschrund that has to be crossed. Camp 3 is at an elevation of 20,500 ft and sits at the junction of the North Ridge and Summit Ridge. It sits on the “Dome” of Annapurna IV and affords us an incredible view of the Summit Ridge.

At the crest 6,483m we will place our Camp III. The summit day above Camp III is long but not technically difficult. However, there are some steep knife-edged ridges and cornices to negotiate so don’t think this will be easy.

Glacier travel skills will come into play as we wind our way to the top of the buttress, establishing around 6,000m (19, 800′). From Camp II we will have spectacular views of the North Face of Annapurna II. From Camp II we continue upward till we reach the east-west crest of the Annapurna Himal. At this point the team will decide whether to place one more camp along the summit ridge or make summit attempts from Camp 3.

The climb along the Summit Ridge affords us beautiful views of the Annapurna Sanctuary. It is a spectacular place to be. The climbing on this section will be very demanding as we will be climbing some steep sections on the Summit Ridge proper as well as traversing some steep slopes below the summit. We may also encounter some rock on the summit pyramid.

After a short stay on the summit we’ll descend to our high camp where we will spend the night. The next day we’ll descend all the way to Base Camp
