Kala Patthar means the ‘black rock’ in Nepali. It is the famous landmark located on the south ridge of Pumori in the Nepalese Himalayas with perfect view of Everest basecamp, Khumbu glacier, Khumbu ice fall, Hillary step and south col – above Gorakshep village. Hike of Kala Patthar is very popular with Everest region trekkers in the purpose of looking sunrise or sun set on the Himalaya range. Close-up view of infinite range of mountains including Mount Everest in around 10 kilometers distance is overwhelming from Kalapatthar summit.

Everest base camp trekking is often renamed as kalapatther trek. Kalapatthar and Everest basecamp are neighbors to each other, however from the base camp of Everest you cannot see Kalapatthar summit. The Panoramic views of Everest in the middle with Nuptse and Lhola on either side look spectacular from Kala Patthar and there are 1000s of infinite mountain range seen along with Mount Everest. Kalapatthar is the best view point of Everest base camp trekking adventure. Climbing Kala Patthar begins at Gorakshep (5,164 m or 16,942 ft whereas the summit height of Kalapatthar is 5,545–5,550 m (18,192–18,209 ft). But in 2006 a university professor used so called precise GPS to measure the summit height of Kalapatthar and claimed to be 5,643 m (18,514 ft). After short climb from the Gorakshep we will get to open land and a helipad, this is where Everest base camp helicopter tour lands their chopper for photo break. In contrast descent is not hard at all for norm knees but if you have bad knees then descending is tougher than climbing up of Kalapatthar; people often descend on their butt.

Towards the end of the summit climb, the black rock reveals its secret and makes climbing difficult; both with high altitude and the rocks on the ground.

Many independent trekkers do not notice about climbing to Kalapatthar or ignore it with their tired body whereas the trekker in organized trekking trip goes for the best view of the entire trek.

Glacial lake Trek

Lakes like Gokyo, Rara and Tilicho are very big or close to the snowy peaks to give mirror image on the blue water of lake.
Most of the lakes in Nepal are assumed holy either in relation with god Shiva or Buddha. People who worship nature also pay respect to the lakes as holy place. All the lakes in Nepal have interesting features. Like Gokyo lakes of Everest region is famous for its cascade pattern on 6 different lakes of same valley. The valley is called Gokyo. Tilicho Lake is the highest altitude lake with beautiful mountain reflection on its blue water. Tilicho lies near by Annapurna circuit trek. Another interesting lake is Rara Lake, which can be trekked or people fly on helicopter to get to Rara Lake. Rara Lake is special because it changes its water into 7 different colors in a day. This natural phenomenon is because of its large size and reflection of mountains and skyline. Rara is the largest lake of Nepal.
Lakes in Nepal are in the cities as well. Phewa Lake in Pokhara has made Pokhara a precious place for tourist. This tourist destination of Nepal has beautiful reflection of wide Himalaya range on the water of Phewa Lake.
Apart from above discussed lakes there are 1000s’ of lake which are rarely discovered. Some of them are in the famous trekking routes like Annapurna or Everest or Manaslu whereas many of them are still unexplored and few of them are in the restricted trekking routes like Dolpo and Numbur cheese circuit. Naming few other lakes of Nepal are as – Gosaikunda lake, Dudhpokhari lake, Damodar kunda lake, Gangapurna lake, Phoksundo lake, Imja Lake, Chola lake, Ghodaghodi lake, Rupa lake, Begnas lake, Jattapokhari lake, Panchpokhari lake and many other.
