Difficulties of Tilicho base camp trek
Tilicho lake with base camp experience makes this trek not only achieving, but also difficult to certain level. Tilicho base camp trek is one of the challenging short trek in Nepal. With few narrow trails, tilicho basecamp trek walk through famous Annapurna circuit trekking trail. Saying that, Tilicho trail till Shirikharka is as easy as Annapurna circuit thorong la pass trekking route.
But as less trekked trail of Annapurna, it demands physical and mental strength from the trekkers. After upper sirikharka you have to pass through rocky trail thus have to have determination of walking on the rocks. Walking around 6 hours a day is normal during the trek.

Before starting Tilicho lake basecamp trek, short hiking or regular physical exercise for a month prior to trek is recommended. If you have time in Kathmandu, there are many hiking destinations around Kathmandu to warm up before starting Annapurna Tilicho basecamp trek. Uphill in the landslide zone, pebbles and stone in active landslide zone, basic tea houses and as so accommodations, rarely maintained trail as very less trekkers visit this route – all these reason has justified Tilicho lake trek as a difficult trekking destination. But for sure, it is not as hard as trekking over Thorong la pass or Larkey la pass in Manaslu or Chola/Kongma la pass in Everest region.
Tilicho lake trekking is one of the less trekked destination in Nepal, which is why the trail is not as great as neighbor Annapurna circuit trek or famous Everest basecamp trekking route.
Rarely maintained trail, uphill, landslide zone and high altitude has made Tilicho Lake trekking a difficult trekking route in the Annapurna region. Getting to the basecamp of Tilicho itself is not as bad as crossing from Shirikharaka to get to the village of basecamp.
Tilicho basecamp trek also connect with Manang village to Jomsom village on the mustang side of Nepal. Through the pass of Mesokanto la, trekkers can get to Jomsom village from Manang – this route crosses Annapurna Himalaya range alike Thorong la pass.
Tilicho lake is also famous as Tilicho basecamp trek. Length of this trek varies in accordance to the mode of transportation and depends on where you start the trek.
Standard/recommended Tilicho lake trekking is less than one week. Old and famous trekking to Tilicho is more 2 weeks. If you connect Tilicho lake trek with Thorong la pass will make 3 weeks.
However, Tilicho lake basecamp trek can be done in 5 days as the shortest possibility. This shortest option would look like this:

4. Trek down to Khangsar

Among all the famous mode of getting to Tilicho lake is by trekking. After development of road facility in the route – people use mixed modes to get to Tilicho Lake. First they take bus to Besishara and use Jeep to get to the trekking start point of Tilicho lake trail. After jeep it is 2 days hike uphill to get to the basecamp of Tilicho lake.
There are 3 trekking routes to get to Pokhara from Tilicho lake. From Tilicho basecamp – you can either cross mesokanto pass and get to Jomsom before driving or trekking back to Pokhara or you can trek down to get to Annapurna circuit trail and trek all the way to Muktinath via Thorong la pass and get to Pokhara.
The common and famous way to get back to Pokhara for trekkers doing Tilicho lake basecamp trek is to trek down to Khangsar and take jeep to Pokhara.
As always you can use horse or helicopter to get to Pokhara.
Wikipedia says the depth of Tilicho Lake is 85 meters. As measured by Government of Nepal Tilicho lake is more than 100 meters deep. Tilicho lake is not the deepest lake of Nepal but it is the biggest lake in highest altitude of 4910 meters above the sea level.
shey Phoksundo is the deepest lake in Nepal with depth measured as 145 meters. This lake lies in the route of Dolpo region. Trekking to Upper dolpo and lower dolpo are more famous because of this Psey Phoiksundo lake.

The trail to Tilicho base camp passes through various beautiful villages including the famous Manang village. This trek is also considered as off – limit trek because it is challenging and trail is narrow. Off limit also because, you can trek over Mesokanta pass or trek around Thorong la to get to other side of the mountain while doing tilicho base camp trekking. In Tilicho base camp trek, there are some restricted places for the tourists due to military rules.

Every tea house has a food menu. Most of them are basically the same but comes with different price. Price for the foods hikes uphill with increase in altitude of the Tilicho trek. Bread, noodles, rice, potatoes are common foods with variation in recipe. You select the food as per your preference, from the menu.
Meat is not recommended as it will not be fresh. Not fresh, because Annapurna trekking region, at Tilicho route, doesn’t allow butchering and all the tea houses might not have fridges to keep frozen meat. Vegetarian food and eggs are recommended.
Dalbhat & noodles is common food which will be available in most of the places during the trek.
Nepalgram doesn’t provide hard drinks. But in case you want it, it will be available in the teahouses. Though, it is not recommended to drink.
Accommodation & ToiletPic: Standard Hotel at Tilicho
Standard hotel accommodation will be provided in Kathmandu and Pokhara with the meal plan of B&B. However you can upgrade this to a 5 star hotel.
During the trek, you will be staying in the teahouses. Teahouses during the trek are comfortable but basic. You will not get an attached bathroom. however, some places might have washrooms attached inside the bed room.
Toilet during the trekking will be indoor. Most of the toilets will have squatting pans. However the destinations below Khangsar village will have commode toilets.
During the off season; you can get a single room. But in the high seasons; you may have to adjust and stay on a sharing basis.
