Kangtega Expedition (6782m) , also known as The Snow Saddle, is a major mountain peak of the Himalayas in Nepal. Its summit rises 6,782 meters rising majestically from the Khumbu and Hinku valley next to another prominent mountain of Thamserku to the North. Ever since its first expedition in 1964, the mountain has lured thousands of mountaineers to successfully ascend its peak.

Kangtega expedition
Kangtega expedition is situated in the sagarmatha national park, in the everest region of nepal.

We approach Kangtega from the South side over the Tsetrawala pass, passing through the Hinku glacier. It takes almost a week to reach the base camp situated at the bottom of the Kangtega ice-fall, resembling the famous Khumbu ice-fall of Mt. Everest. The camp to Kangtega is followed up with steep snow slopes, ice-falls and narrow crevasses. However, upon making it through its top, you are rewarded with the amazing mountain views and surrounding valleys’ beauty.

Climbing Kangtega is considered technically challenging due to its steep, icy slopes and unpredictable weather conditions. While it is not as high as some of the other peaks in the region, it requires solid mountaineering skills and experience with high-altitude climbing. Climbing Kangtega requires careful planning, preparation, and adherence to safety protocols. It’s essential to be well-equipped, physically fit, and accompanied by experienced guides and support staff.

Route  to Kangtega Expedition

There is a trail you can follow to summit Kangtega Peak. The trail passes from Lukla, Tashing Ongma, Osila Kharka, Thangnak, and to the base camp of Kangtega Peak, this route is 23.6Km and the climbing route is 13.3Km.

The summit push typically involves climbing from Base Camp to Camp 1, Camp 2, and possibly Camp 3 before making the final push to the summit. The ascent to the summit requires navigating steep slopes, crossing glaciers, and overcoming technical challenges. After reaching the summit, you’ll descend back to Base Camp, retracing your steps along the route. Depending on the conditions and team’s schedule, you may spend additional days at higher camps during the descent.

Mt. Kangtega is The Snow Saddle and is a beautiful mountain, which rises majestically in the Everest Region. It touches the Khumbu and Hinku Valley and lies close to one of the main mountains of the Sherpas, that is, Thamserku.

You will take one week to reach the base of Kangtega base camp, which lies at an altitude of 5,182m/17,000ft. From the south side of Kantega, you will head off to its summit. Also, you climb on 45 to 50 degrees snow slope that leads you to a knife-edged short summit ridge, which offers you a great view of mountains and valleys. As you climb, you come across the Tsetrawala pass and the Hinku glacier. Camp I is set up at an altitude of 6,000m/19,680ft. Onward, there are some narrow crevasses and snow slopes.

We take about a week to reach the Mt. Kangtega (6,782m/22,244ft.) base camp situated at the bottom of the Kangtega Ice-Fall which resembles with the infamous Khumbu Ice Fall of Mt. Everest. Setting up our base camp at 5,182m/17,000ft. Though an obvious route up the mountain would be to follow the Ice Fall, we opt for the rock face leading to a ridge around 6,070m/19,909ft and rappel down for about 70 meters to reach at the top of the ice fall to avoid possible ice fall hazards. Camp I is placed here at an altitude of 6,000m/19,680ft. On ward we overcome some narrow crevasses and climb some interesting snow slope to reach camp two at 6,400m/20,992ft. on the south ridge of the mountain. Before the sun totally goes down, impressive mountain views can be viewed with a blue sky turning to golden and to crimson.
Next day, an early morning push through 45 ~ 50 degree snow slopes soon leads to knife edged short summit ridge. The summit offers great mountain views and the valley surrounding.

Our Sherpa support will help carry food, fuel, equipment and fix the rope.
