Responsible Travel Guidelines
Plastic Waste in Nepal
If you can, avoid buying plastic water bottles as much as possible during your hikes/treks in Nepal. Plastic waste is a huge problem in Nepal; to reduce your plastic use, carry a thermos flask with purification tablets or a reusable water bottle with you and fill it up when you can.
Do not litter
Everyone can avoid using plastic bags by using reusable bags, but the problem isn’t only plastic bags. It’s litter. Keep the nature clean and your waste to a minimum –take reusable Ziplock bags with you during your hikes/treks so you can bring back your rubbish with you.
Hiking with babies and kids in Kathmandu
Hiking with kids (particularly with toddlers and babies) can be intimidating. But the earlier you start hiking with your kids, the easier it will become over the years. Having children doesn’t mean you cannot have a hell of adventure. And I am here to prove that hiking can become even better and funnier with kids involved.
- It is amazing how the outdoors can bring out the best in kids. If you’re thinking about hiking or trekking with kids in Nepal, just do it. It’s worth it!Do not postpone. Instead, start gradually with an easy hike. Engaging in a day hike around Kathmandu can be a great first step before heading to your first Himalayan trek with your kids.
- Whatever day hike you choose to do in Kathmandu, here are some useful tips that you should know about:
- Bring snacks (a lunch as well if hiking a longer route) and plenty of water. If you hike with a baby, consider stopping along the way for frequent breastfeeding breaks; and if you don’t breastfeed, bring powdered milk and a thermos.
- Do not hike with your kids during the monsoon season (especially with young kids).
- If you hike with a baby or a toddler, do not go without an adequate baby carrier. The best ones go up to 20kg and have a neck support so the little ones can enjoy naps.
- If you hike with a toddler, opt for a route with some flat trails (Tarebhir is a good choice), so, you will be able to make your toddler hike a little as well.
- Cover your kids with a sun hat and sunscreen.
- Bring diapers, wet wipes and travel changing mat.
- If your kid is above 4, buy him trekking boots. Below 4, a good pair of sneakers is enough.
- In my experience, the best time to hike with babies and toddlers is in the morning (less whining, more laughter).
Other activities in Tarebhir
It is possible to stay overnight at the Tarebhir campsite.
‘Ultimate Venue’ also offers the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of different activities: combat obstacle course, high ropes obstacle, rock climbing, cycling, etc.
Tarebhir Cycling
We saw a lot of groups cycling and this looks like an awesome place to do it. I don’t do mountain biking, so I can’t speak to how much fun it is, but it did seem to be a popular choice among locals. There’s a wide road and it’s a mix of pavement and dirt. Overall, it seemed ideal for cycling.

This is a great hike for beginners and for those looking to get out in nature without having to leave the city. We went with my two nieces who haven’t done much hiking before and they were both able to complete the hike which was super exciting for us. We were all really proud of them. This hike is not too steep although it does go constantly uphill. It’s also very easy to navigate. The bottom is a paved road and the top is a dirt road, so it’s impossible to get lost.
The hike starts in Budhanilkantha (by the Radhakrishna Temple on Google Maps) which is on the north-eastern side of Kathmandu. I’d recommend taking a Pathao here and having it drop you off, or you can hire a taxi for the day to wait. If you are driving yourself, there isn’t a proper parking place but the road is very wide, so there is space to park on the street. I recommend parking at the bottom and walking the entire way, but if you’re brand new to hiking, you can drive halfway and park next to the first picnic area and then walk up from there.
This hike sits just on the outskirts of Shivapuri National Park which means that you can enjoy the beautiful woods without paying a fee to enter. This hike is completely free.
It’s definitely a good idea to bring water with you and a few snacks, but you don’t have to pack too much to eat because there are a few restaurants at the top where you can have lunch, snacks, or drinks. My nieces did appreciate having one walking stick each which helped them in the areas that were a little steeper.
Photosession, camping, mountain biking, laughing, chatting, walking and further activities are the usual sceneries. The hill ridge section is incredible. Once you think, it’s the last point, then another hill comes.
We didn’t check out all of the restaurants, but I would recommend the Old Village Cottage which had lots of good snacks for lunch. We had Wai Waisandeko, French fries, mixed fried rice and a few other snacks that were all good. The views from there are really nice and on a clear day you can see across the Kathmandu Valley.
As I mentioned earlier, this hike has become extremely popular among locals. In Nepal, most people only get one day off a week and that day is Saturday. If you choose to go on a Saturday, there will be crowds and it may not be as peaceful as you hoped. We went on a Sunday and it was almost empty. We only saw a few other groups and it was super quiet. Therefore, I highly recommend skipping Saturdays, and visiting on Sundays or during the week.
Well, you need to drive from your place to the hiking gateway, which is Jagdol at Gokarneshor. For example, if you are driving from Thamel, it’s about 35 minutes driving via Chabahil, Chuchhepati and drive straightly to Jagdol. Driving can be a bit further, but the real fun begins from Jagdol.

As the hiking destination is so close within Kathmandu valley. This trail can be join any age either small family, student, senior citizen whatever.
Take return journey, further half an hour hike down hill towards the Budhanilkantha which is famous Lord Vishnu Sleeping God located here at the base of Shivapuri Hill. You can also visit Monastery and Stupa at Budhanilkantha if you have enough time until the Kathmandu return. Tarebhir has become extremely popular not only for the hiking, but also for the camping and mountain biking tour. As the hiking destination is so close from Kathmandu, you can easily connect the trail on your desired date.
There are infinite hiking options inside the Kathmandu Valley, from easy 1-hour hikes to longer routes. It might be surprising but one of the best things about Kathmandu is that there’s always a new hiking route near you waiting to be discovered.
I would rate this hike as easy, but it may be a little difficult if it’s your first time hiking. I would suggest Nagi Gompa for beginners to try prior to this hike. If you are an avid trekker, this hike may be too easy and you might want to opt for something more difficult like Champa Devi or Jamacho. Overall, it was a good hike to do as a group for fun family time.
Details Tarebhir Hiking Time
With two kids, it took us about one and a half hours to reach the top, but we started from the very bottom of the road. If you are a fast walker, it could be done in 45 minutes. If you park near the picnic area, then it only takes about 25 minutes. Those who are unable to walk can drive all the way to the top to enjoy the view. We left an hour at the top to have lunch and it took another half hour to get back to the car.
Overall, this hike took half a day (a total of 3 hours) to go up, rest, and come back down.
