Itinerary
After your Breakfast at your Hotel in Pokhara at 07:00am in the morning, we drive to Kande by private vehicles. It takes one hour driving from Pokhara. Kande is the starting point of this trek. There is nice walking trail from Kande to Australian Camp. It takes one hour half walk to reach Australian Camp from Kande. Australian Camp is a beautiful village best known, where on a clear day you can see an unobstructed view of the Himalayan Mountains of Annapurna range, Machhapuchhre, Manaslu range and also beautiful green hills.
From Australian Camp, we will trek to Dhampus. Dhampus is another nice village. It takes about 1 hour walking from Australian Camp. The trail from Australian Camp to Dhampus is very nice. We walk through jungle. If it is clear day, you will see Annapurna Himalayas on the background. In the middle of the Dhampus village, we will have Lunch. Dhampus is a Nepali typical village. You can still see nice himalayas View if weather is still clear.
Now, you trek from Dhampus to Phedi. It takes another two hours walking down to Phedi. The trail is stone steps which is follow by the long generation. From Phedi, 30 minute’s drive back to your Hotel in Pokhara by private vehicle.
The distance from Pokhara to the Australian Camp is approximately 26 kilometers. After driving to Kande village, you will need to hike towards Australian Camp to reach your destination. An average hike from Kande to Australian Base Camp takes approximately 2 hours.
The hiking trail from Kande to Australian Camp is well maintained and well-managed. It is easy to walk on the stone-paved old trekking trail. You will pass through a beautiful forest of Rhododendrons before arriving at the Camp. You can enjoy bird sounds, a mountain view, and a valley view during this 1-hour walk.
You can find a couple of guest houses where you can spend the night but do not expect luxury accommodations like in Pokhara, though there is Angels Haven Guest House & Restaurant located in Australian Camp, Dhampus, Kaski, Nepal, and some other guest houses as well. The dining hall offers a beautiful view of the mountains.

History of Australian Camp
The real name of Australian Camp is actually “Thulo Kharka” meaning big pasture. It used to be seasonal herding place of buffalo and cow herders from the villages bellow Dhampus and other.
It was unknown or less walked by trekkers till early 90s while Phedi – Dhampus – Pothana – Deurali – Landruk – Chhomrong route for Annapurna Sanctuary Trek aka Annapurna Base Camp was already popular, the route is just 15 minutes away to west of it.
It is said that during late 80s, people from Austria found it so beautiful and they used to come and camp there for several days as it is so peaceful and pristine offering mesmerizing Mountain View.
Since then people started to call it Austrian camp and as it is difficult to pronounce for local Nepalese people and then pronounced it Australian camp this is how the place got new name as Australian Camp.

The hike journey

Best Season to visit Australian Camp

There are several lodges at Australian Camp, they facilitate for eating and sleeping, most of guest houses offer en-suite rooms and WiFi is available, the good mobile reception.
