Holi festival in Nepal is considered as a Hindu festival that takes place every spring. One of the most celebrated Hindu religious holidays also known as the Festival of Colors and the Festival of Love. It’s all about new beginnings. This festival welcomes the spring season and celebrates the end of winter.

This festival always falls on Purnima, or the day of the full moon. The Nepali name of this festival is Fagu Purnima. Nepalese celebrate it on the Falgun (February-March) i.e. the 11th month of a Nepali calendar on the day of the full moon. So, Fagu is named after Falgun month and Purnima means a full moon.

It honors Radha Krishna’s enduring and heavenly love. The day also represents the victory of good over evil as it honors Lord Vishnu’s victory over Hiranyakashipu in his role as NarasimhaNarayana.

The night before Holi, people assemble for a HolikaDahan, during which they engage in religious rites in front of a bonfire and pray for the destruction of their inner evil, much like how Holika, the sister of the demon king Hiranyakashipu, perished in the flames.

The following morning is RangwaliHoli (Dhuleti), when people smear and douse one another in color. Everyone and anywhere is considered fair game while using water cannons and water-filled balloons to play and color each other. People visit family members throughout the day, and both colleagues and foes gather to speak, eat, drink, and engage in festive treats.

On the first day of Holi, residents in the hilly region celebrate the holiday, followed by those in the Terai region on the second day. People attend their friends’ and family members’ homes on this Day to paint each other, dance, and consume alcohol all day long. People today pelt one another with water. This the festival that is renowned for the celebration with color and water.

In Nepal, individuals can enjoy and freely celebrate Holi, which is also regarded as a festival of happiness. It is basically a guarantee that if you walk down the street during the Holi celebration, people will hose down you in color and water. So be prepared to be colored and wet.

The festival of colors also known as Phagu Purnima, along with many other Hindu festivals, is celebrated in Nepal as a national festival. It is an important major Nepal-wide festival along with Dashain and Tihar (Dipawali). In Terai region holi is celebrated by knowing big festivals among the other festivals in Nepal.
