The peak was first ascent on May 15, 1955 by a French expedition however an American expedition team attempted in the spring of 1954 from southeast ridge. Makalu is an isolated eight thousander mountain seen even in the Everest base camp trekking whose shape is a four-sided pyramid and sighted in distance and because of the shape it does not have enough of white snow which make it look like black rock standing tall in similar shape as the Egyptian pyramid of Giza.
Best part of Makalu basecamp trek is Makalu-Barun Valley – A glacier valley starting from the foot of the Makalu which is decorated with many glacial lakes scattered in huge area. Valley provides beautiful contrasts of waterfalls cascade into deep gorges, rocks rising in beautiful shape that you would love to climb bu there are not any proper rock climbing sites, infinite green forests which elongates as far as you can see, and colorful flowers bloom beneath white snow peaks. Makalu barun conservation area conserves unique landscape and has pristine mountain ecosystems on Earth. Rare species of wildlife is yet to be discovered in the conservation area.
