Solo trek

This is a restricted trekking trail in Nepal. To trek to the region, you must have to be 2 people at least, and then only the government of Nepal issue special trekking permits for Upper Mustang. As a restricted trekking destination, you must have to hire a trekking guide for this trekking.

Thus, solo trekking to upper mustang is not recommended and possible. However, some people pay for 2 special trekking permit and do solo trek to Upper Mustang. For your information, Special permit to Upper mustang is expensive – but if money is not an issue, there are benefits of solo trekking to Upper Mustang.

History of Upper Mustang

Upper Mustang was a part of the Tibetan Kingdom of Gungthang until 1830’s, and thus it has a lot of interesting history and antique cultural traditions preserved by then. Today you can also pay a visit to the four storied building at Lo Manthang where the king used to live.

Until very recent, King of Lomanthang used to be recognized by government of Nepal. The prince, however, is in hotel business at present and King is no more alive. Walking around the kings palace and the whole village will be an awesome experience during Lo Manthang village tour.

The King of Lho

The king of today does not have the power to rule the people anymore, but his people still love and respect him. Apart from the king and his palace, trekkers doing the can visit many monasteries and Gomba along the trail; for instance Gomba Thungsen that was built on the 15th century B.C., and Ghar Gompa that was built in the 7th century B.C. are iconic among many of the Monastery in Upper Mustang.

Ghar Gomba is regarded as one of the oldest in the region and is believed to be built for successful construction of Potola palace in Tibet.

Best time for Upper Mustang Trek

This is a famous trekking as Monsoon season trek in rain shadow zone of Nepal. With that being said, best time for trekking to Upper Mustang is none other than rainy season of Nepal. Rainy season of Nepal starts from the end of May and last almost till the beginning of august.

As Upper mustang is by the Kaligandaki River but behind the hills of Annapurna and Dhaulagiir Mountian range, this is rain shadow zone in Nepal Himalaya. People travel to Upper mustang almost all over the year except in the winters. Winter in upper mustang is not recommended for trekking.

Few reasons to justify; why upper mustang trek is recommended in the rainy season? Firstly, In the monsoon, people in upper mustang will be working in their field, they have family functions, community functions and festivals; because of all this happenings in upper mustang, it is better to travel this destination in the rainy season.

Secondly, in the rainy season trekking to Langtang, Kanchenjunga, Annapurna & other trails of Nepal is not recommended; because of leech, cloudy sky and majorly the wet trekking trail with rain landslides or flooding. At the same time Upper mustang being famous as a dry part of Nepal Himalaya will be nice and dry.

Trek Altitude

Trekking is in between 2600 meters to 3840 meters above the sea level. This 1240 meter altitude does not fluctuate in high scale. Trekking trail of Upper Mustang is gentle and flat. Uphill and downhill are rare and trekking trail does not go higher than 3800 meters altitude. Neither high passes are involved in Upper mustang trail – nor the trails has straight uphill trekking, Upper Mustang is low altitude trek for easy going trekkers

The last and famous village of Upper Mustang trek is Lho Manthang and it is situated at 3800 meters above the sea level. In this altitude, trekkers need to spend 2 nights for rest and exploring different forts, Monastery, villages and caves. Trek in December

Trekking in Upper Mustang is nearly impossible. Upper Mustang trekking in December is a big No. As a rain shadow zone of Nepal Himalaya trekking trail has no vegetation at all, it is a dry mountain & landscape is deserted. So imagine, what happened if it snows in the desert, you will get lost easily.

In December very few people of Upper Mustang stays in the village, whereas most of them migrate to the lower altitude and thus most of the tea houses in route of Upper Mustang trek will be closed. No tea house, no locals, nothing happening, snow covered dry mountains and extreme cold are supportive reasons for not recommending Upper Mustang in December.

Upper Mustang Trekking Cost

Cost of Upper mustang trek is not cheap and if you compare Upper Mustang trekking price with other regular trekking routes of Nepal, it will look even worse. Upper Mustang route has highest cost for its special trekking permit among all the restricted trekking in Nepal. Because of this reason, total trekking price for Upper Mustang is higher than other trekking package.

One person trekking to Upper Mustang must pay 50 US dollar per day for his/her special trekking permits to Upper Mustang. For a complete trekking experience of you must have, at least 10 days of Special permit for upper Mustang. This is the main reason for high cost of Upper Mustang trekking package in comparison to other trekking trail.

Apart from price for special trekking permit, guide and porter for Upper Mustang trek – cost of accommodation and food is higher than in other route. This is because of less trekker visiting this restricted trail. But this price difference has always kept Upper mustang trekking trail as the peaceful, less crowded and highly hospitable trekking.

Trek itinerary

In general people trek up to Lho Manthang via Charang Village and get back down to Chhusang via Dhakmar, visitng Ghar Monastery, Ghar Gompa is the oldest Monastery found in Nepal, so far. Apart from this famous route, trek trail has an optional itinerary. This optional itinerary takes you to hidden villages of Yara Ghara.

This Yara Ghara trail of Upper Mustang can be an interesting experience but you must have fitness level to walk more than 10 hours from Yara village to Chhuksang, as there is no tea houses in between till 2021. Mustang trekking route with yara Ghara village is visited by very few people. The trekking trail is not marked properly and an experienced guide is in need.

Trekking to upper Mustnag in April is not hard as trekking in December. April is spring season for Nepal and in spring, Upper Mustang trek is fairly okay but still is not the best season for trekking this hidden kingdom of Nepal. If you are trekking is spring it is better to keep mini spikes for downhill trek, in need. However, heavy snowfall might block the trail and alternative route could be used.
