Annapurna Base camp trek without guide

Annapurna Base camp trek is doable without trekking guide. There are abundant tea house till the point of Chhomrong village. But when you start hiking uphill from Chhomrong and towards Annapurna base camp trek for 4 days, number of tea houses is really limited and hence you need to be careful booking in advance.

If your booking is not easy task then start early and get to the destination. Annapurna base camp trekking trail is along the river valley, inside the jungle Annapurna conservation area, easy and if you are trekking in the peak season like spring and autumn; despite of accommodation being full, crowd of trekkers will help you to track the trail.

As you start trekking to Annapurna Base Camp from Nayapul there are two different routes to get to the base camp, one takes you from Ghorepani with magnificent view from a famous hill station called Poonhill and another gets you to the base camp via Jhinu hot spring.

Wherever you go for Annapurna base camp trekking, you can ask to the villagers for the trail to go to the base camp till chhomrong (if you know okay Nepali). Once you start trekking above Chhomrong, you will rarely see local peoples so asking about the trail is hard thing.

But the great thing is that, above chhomrong there is mostly a single way to Annapurna base camp. Single trail to the base camp is inside the jungle and marked with arrow and sign post of Annapurna base camp trekking trail.

Talking about the destinations in Annapurna base camp trek, lets discuss in short of each and every place from the updated statistics till 10/23/2017.

Nayapul, starting point of Annapurna base camp trek

This is starting point of the Annapurna base camp trek and ending point of Annapurna circuit trek. Till this destination you will be dropped by taxi, car. If you want to go by bus there are lots of local buses till Nayapul bit taking local bus is not recommended as you might not catch where to get off.

When you start trekking from Nayapul you will get to TIMS and permit check point. Nayapul has lots of tea houses and restaurants for your lunch.

Hile, first night of Your Annapurna base camp trek

Your first night is supposed to be at Hile, but if you can walk more you can get to up above Ulleri with good fitness level. But I never suggest walking those uphill steps in your first day of 2 weeks Annapurna base camp trek.

To get to Ulleri you need to climb like 900 meters and most of it is walking on the straight uphill stairs. So you need to have good fitness, as the uphill climbing to reach banthati from tikhedhunga invokes hardship of the trekking.

However, in overall you can consider the Annapurna base camp trek difficulty as a moderate outdoor activity in Nepal.

Hile can be accessible by jeep, so you can take jeep till Hile and hike to Ulleri instead. But the trekking trail from Nayapul to Hile is nice as well. Ulleri has more than 10 tea houses and restaurants.

Bhanthati and Nagethati is other two villages after ulleri.

Ghorepani, a beautiful village of entire Annapurna base camp trek

Your second day of Annapurna base camp trek is supposed to be Ghorepani situated at an altitude of 9446 feet or 2880 meters. This is one of the awaited destinations for most of the trekkers, since you can see two different mountain ranges of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna Himalaya, even from your bedroom.

If you are trekking independently in the peak trekking seasons in Nepal and if you don’t find the perfect room, then you never know how the view will be from your bed room, but surely you will get the perfect view from Ghorepani village.

Ghorepani is the starting point to hike to Poonhill for sunrise or sunset. Ghorepani is famous village not only for Annapurna base camp trek but also for Annapurna circuit tilicho trek in Nepal.

Poonhill is one of the great place or hill top found by local man of the Annapurna region called Tek Bahadur Pun. By his cast/surname Pun, this hilltop is famous as Poonhill (in the modified form). Founder of this hill station, pun is an ex-Gurkhas for British army.

Ghorepani has lots of tea houses to stay overnight and few restaurants and even some mini marts. But it is interesting to share the fact that, trekkers might not get accommodation sometimes, because of high season as this is the junction point of many trekking trail in Annapurna region.

Khopra ridge trek, APC, ABC, Upper mustang, Community trail and Annapurna circuit with tilich lake trek ends here.

However, Annapurna base camp trek has few other options to starts but if you want to include Poonhill you must go via Ghorepani. And as a strong recommendation, from acclimatization prospective and beauty of the Himalaya; Ghorepani village route for Annapurna base cap trek is recommended.

Ghorepani is also a famous destination for Ghorepani Poonhill trek and Annapurna sanctuary trek too.

At 2700 meter or 8856 feet height on route of Annapurna base camp trekking trail, Tadapani gives magnificent view of three major mountains; Mt Annapurna south, Mt Annapurna III and sacred mountain fishtail.

There are few guest houses at tandapani. If you are dping Annapurna base camp trek Nepal, in the peak trekking season, you might not get accommodation at tandaani for you. Because, Tadapani is a junction of many trekking trails; like Ghorepani trek, Khopra khayar lake trek, Ghandruk trek, Annapurna base camp trek etc. and also Tadapani has very limited tea houses with less accommodation.

Tadapani is always a busy place throughout the year.

But government of Nepal is enhancing the infrastructure in tourism; in coming future this problem will be solved all along the route of Annapurna base camp trekking trail. Tadapani needs pre booking of tea house, alike to other destination in of Annapurna base camp trek above sinuwa village.

In case if you don’t get space at Tadapani, you can walk one more hour down to place called Chuile. Chuile has two lodges and few home stays, where you can stay for the night.

Tadapani village is on the hilltop, thus the view of the mountain is perfect and close. People are welcoming and village is in the middle of Jungle.

Literally Tadapani means a palce with water in far distance. Fragmenting the word, Tada is far and pani is water.

Chhomrong is a small town with couple of shops, where you can buy souvenirs back home and some of the trekking requirements like Toiletries’ and sanitizers’ for your Annapurna base camp trek. Chhomrong has plenty of tea houses. Chhomrong is at the altitude of 2080m.

If you are travelling in budget it is better to buy some food from Chhomrong, because things are going to be expensive above this point. From the top to the bottom of the village tea houses will be welcoming you.

View of the Mountains will be even closer at Chhomrong, more closely than from Tadapani village. Make sure you take shower here as you might not get good hot shower in the trail up towards Annapurna base camp, from here and eve if you get one, shower will be really busy.

At an altitude of 3000 meters/9840 feet Himalaya is not big place but it is near to the river inside the jungle. If you are one who loves to see river flowing, you would love this place.

Himalaya is hidden inside jungle with chirping of bird, sighting of wild animals, refreshing air and chilling breeze of water stream but the river coming from Annapurna base camp. We trek along this river all the way to MBC in Annapurna base camp trek.

As Chhomrong have just two tea houses. From here you will have to share rooms with stranger, if you do not have handful trekking partners to take a whole room. But in coming future this problem of accommodation will be solved, as this is special management area and ACAP is looking forward to expand the capacity.

You will see top of the Mt. Fishtail from this place and no more snow capped mountains view for Himalaya.

Deurali, out of the jungle

Deurali at the height of 3190 meter or 10463 feet is nice and cozy very near to the mountains. Durali have 5 guest houses with good accommodation.

On the side of the river Deurali is cold and bit windy, if you stay at the top where Deurali guest House is; it will be windier.

Also Deurali is higher and near to Mountains so you might not feel comfortable with cold and sleep. During the night it gets colder and altitude problem might get bad.

But in the morning, you will start trekking from here to Annapurna base camp which will be spectacular as you start your trekking journey towards the mountains you have seen from last weeks.

Machhapuchhre Base Camp

This place called MBC at the altitude of 4000 meters or 13120 feet. Machhapurchhre Base camp (MBC) has spectacular view numerous mountains. You will be right at the bottom of Mt Fishtail and surrounded by mountains from all the side. View of Mt Annapurna south and fishtail in Annapurna base camp side looks mesmerizing.

At MBC you will feel like, you have been to the mountains for real in your Annapurna base camp trek. If you count snowcapped mountains as real mountains; then the real mountain trekking kicks off from this point in Annapurna base camp trek.

As this is base camp of Mt. Machhapuchhre you will have great view of Fishtail from top to bottom. And view of Mt Annapurna, Mt Hiuchuli, and Mt Gandarvachuli is mesmerizing as well. Here at this time of year till 2020 AD, there are 5 tea houses.

ABC, Annapurna base camp

Annapurna base camp is the last destination of Annapurna base camp trekking at the altitude of 4210 meters or 13808 feet. Interesting thing of Annapurna base camp trekking is, you don’t need to walk on rocky glacier to go to the base camp of Annapurna. As it is very difficult geology to walk down to glacier i don’t recommend it. But there is edge on the destination where you can go and see the deep glacier.

At Annapurna base camp you don’t need to hike further like in Everest Base camp trekking. Just a minute from lodge you stay is the trekker’s base camp.

So, some people even walk all the way from MBC to ABC if the accommodation is not available. ABC is 3 hours away from MBC and Annapurna base camp has 4 lodges.

At last, above destination introduction of Annapurna Base camp trek is drafted by experience and years of guiding memory in route of Annapurna base camp trekking trail. If you are skipping trekking to Poonhill, then some of the illustrated destinations will be skipped and you will pass by some other places either Phedi or Kande with Pothana, Deurali, Landruk and Jhinu connecting to Chhomrong of the trail discussed above.

I wish you have a great time and safe travel to Annapurna base camp trek. Jungle, River valley, Mountains, Hills, People, culture and hot spring on Annapurna bae camp trekking route are interesting factors of ABC trek.

Have a great time in Annapurna base camp trek, adventure lovers!
